Federer
It’s going to be his day !
Summer of 2021 promises the sporting joys Summer of 2020 has been forced to withdraw. The Maison du Dessin de Presse has therefore chosen to join in the festivities and train the muscles of laughter, while encouraging spectators to react and applaud in front of a cartoonists’ tournament. Featured are Herrmann and Vincent, who play perfectly in doubles. One scripting, the other drawing, they return the ball with the same talent as the hero of their joint comic, we named Roger Federer.
After a first volume about our national champion’s childhood « l’enfance de l’art », this summer the duo returns to the field with a sequel of evocative title, « Mirka & Rodger ». This exhibition provides an opportunity to appreciate the work of the authors, from warming up to break point and winning service. Herrmann delivers his screenplay in the form of dialogues and sketches, on which Vincent bounces, testing, adjusting the layout, asserting his style. Thus, it is possible to appreciate the beginning of a multi-faceted comic book and discover pages that no longer appear in the final version.
Of course, the exhibition does not present the whole comic book. When choosing boards (along the large wall, from left to right), we focused on the technical point of view (sketches, evolution of drawings and colors) as well as graphic and narrative highlights. From the Gstaad Open, his exchange with Marc Rosset, his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2003 (and his meeting with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II) to the birth of his relationship with Mirka and their mutual love for each other but also for the competition.
In addition, few boards from volume 1, « l’enfance de l’art », remind us Rodger’s debut in the tennis world and Herrmann’s as a big fan!
Attention please ! This summer also marks Roger Federer’s 40th birthday, which he will celebrate on August 8. A chance to rediscover cartoons that have marked his career since 2003. And at the center of our improvised court, like so many wise spectators, are sitting side by side Alex, Ballouhey, Barrigue, Bénédicte, Bertschy, Burki, Caro, Chappatte, Herrmann , Mix & Remix, Pétillon, Pitch, Soulcié, Schrank, Swen and Vincent. Cartoons were chosen consistently with the comic topics (family life, victories, relationship with other players, popular impact). Enough reasons to award many gold medals.
Enjoy your visit, “quiet please” and with a round of applause happy birthday Rodger!
